MWBA Bike Bell Program
Put a BELL on your bike!
A bike bell is the best way to communicate with other trail users long before you cross paths. You will be surprised at the thanks you’ll hear for using a bell. Other trail users will be able to hear you before they see you. There are less “surprises” around that blind corner. If the trail is wide enough hikers may be standing to the side when you approach and a potential trail conflict has been prevented. Bells are brilliant.
Countless trail runners, hikers, and equestrians have expressed their gratitude for MTB Bells!
Be Nice, Say Hi! and slow/stop for other trail users!
ALWAYS Yield or Stop for Hikers & Horses! A bell is a part of “Trail Courtesy” not a replacement for it.
The MWBA bells are a “bear bell” style that can be silenced during climbs with its built in magnet. With the magnet released, the bell rattles freely as you descend. You don’t have to manually ding the bell, it rattles as you ride!
A number of bike bell designs are on the market now and specifically focus on mountain biking and notifying other trail users. The Awareness Bell is handmade locally and has become quite popular with some MWBA Members. Its a loud bell and can be heard from a distance. The TIMBER! Bell is a great option that can be turned on and off from your handlebars!
Downhill riders should yield to ALL UPHILL traffic, including climbing bikes
If the trail is thin and narrow, please stop and let others come by.
A bell does not give you the right of way! Please stop for others on narrow trails.
MWBA hands out free bike bells on our trail work days. We encourage the use of bells on our local trails!
Our Bell Program has been made possible by generous member donations and our Pancake Breakfast fundraiser.
