Matt Baffert, sometimes referred to simply as Baffert, was invited to join the MWBA board because of his dedication to trail work and love of the Angeles National Forest. Baffert has become MWBA’s second Trail Boss, his experience in the construction industry a valuable asset to our trail work. One of MWBA’s B Certified USFS Sawyers, Baffert wields skills both with his 24″ handsaw and the MWBA chainsaw crews.
Baffert contributes to the MWBA Instagram account with great photos of trail work days and rides in the Angeles National Forest.
Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, Baffert chased waves surfing around the world. “The tides have turned,” says Matt. After an epic trip to Grafton Mesa, UT, his love of the mountains surpassed his love of the ocean. Climbing the steep and rocky faces of the San Gabriel mountains is now his favorite challenge, whether on dirt or pavement.
Some of Baffert’s favorite road rides are in the Eastern Sierras, like Horseshoe Meadows and Onion Valley. Locally, you can find him all over the Angeles National Forest. Mt. Hillyer, Mt. Disappointment, Mt. Pacifico, Idlehour, Strawberry Peak and Ken Burton are amongst Baffert’s favorite trails. He loves going thru Mueller Tunnel to ride the front side of Mt. Wilson and Hwy 39 is his favorite road in the San Gabriels.
Baffert is also a talented photographer and you can follow his great imagery of the Angeles National Forest on Instagram.
