Friends of the Angeles Meeting Report

Category : Advocacy

On Tuesday, April 26th I attended a meeting at the ANF HQ in Arcadia which was one of three initial meetings intended to communicate about a possible non-profit association/foundation focused on supporting the ANF and gathering input from existing volunteer organizations and interested parties.  I am going to briefly summarize what I understood of the discussions and include my remarks, which are personal opinions and include both information from other meetings and some deduction about things that were not explicitly stated.  Besides myself, attendees included Steve Messer from CORBA, Mark Gage, Tom (Pirana), Bradley (Triple B), Gary Hilliard (Mt Disappointment 50K), Hal Winton (Angeles Crest 100 Run), Richard Nyerges (Bear Canyon Trail Crew), people from other trail work and volunteer groups, in-holders/permit holders, a paid organizer for the Sierra Club, USFS staff (the new Superintendent, Tom Contreas, Marty Dumpis, Gerald Reponen) and others.

Eaton Wash Corridor Trail

Category : Advocacy

On July 29th I attended a public meeting concerning the Eaton Wash Corridor Plan. There were about 25-30 people attending, counting the presenters.  The meeting was opened by Marc Stirdivant of the Arroyo and Foothills Conservancy.   There is a lot of overlap between their board and the Altadena Crest Trail (ACT) Restoration WorkingGroup.  Marc introduced the planning group by noting that they had previously worked on the Emerald Horseshoe Concept Plan for the Conservancy while they were graduate students at Cal Poly Pomona.  This is a massive document which shows that the planners should be very familiar with local conditions.  To boil over 100 pages down to a sentence, the concept is to have continuous trails and green space from the Arroyo Seco on the west up to and across Altadena following the ACT to Eaton Canyon, then down Eaton Wash to the Rio Hondo.  Here is a link to the main part of their report, which loads a bit slow being 20 MB:
